stillHQ Upcoming SeaGL Talk & stillHQ Joins The Open Invention Network

Hello, Internet.

We have been quiet as we finish stillOS's 2nd Preview... It should be coming out very soon (no exact date yet, but we have just one more thing to do). While stillOS Preview 1 was somewhat alpha-quality software, stillOS Preview 2 will be much closer to beta-quality software. Aside from polish and bug fixes, the new stillOS Preview will include a new onboarding tool and a new terminal emulator built from the ground up for real-world work, rather than for fixing things on your computer. We do this by heavily integrating containers and remote sessions. Here are some screenshots taken by someone who's alpha testing stillTerminal (there will be some visual bugs shown that should be fixed by the time the preview comes out).

We had a couple of announcements planned alongside the 2nd Preview of stillOS; however, a release blocker for stillOS Preview 2 is taking much longer than anticipated, so we are announcing these things now.

SeaGL - Linux Doesn't Resonate With The Mainstream

Cameron Knauff from stillHQ will be giving a talk at the 2025 Seattle GNU/Linux Conference (SeaGL). The talk is titled "Linux Doesn't Resonate With The Mainstream". This is about the problems everyday people have with Linux that have prevented it from becoming a solid competitor in the desktop space for the everyday consumer. These problems aren't the typical "not enough apps" issues Linux has, but range from stability and usability issues with certain distributions and desktops to the brand's reception. In this talk, I will look at what works and what doesn't in Windows and macOS, and how we can bring these to a Linux desktop to create something the everyday consumer would want to use. This talk will be live-streamed on YouTube by the SeaGL team, but we would appreciate people showing up in person.
